The Bruce Overnight Edge: Sunday Nights are for Action

The Bruce Overnight Edge: Sunday Nights are for Action

March 27, 2026 - Chicago, IL

The 24 Hour Reality

Global events do not respect trading hours. Managing risk in the modern market ecosystem requires a mechanism to assimilate breaking news and geopolitical shocks as they happen.

The conflict involving Iran escalated dramatically outside of regular market hours on the weekend of February 28th when the United States and Israel initiated military strikes. The overnight session on Sunday presented the first opportunity for US equity market participants to react, hedge, and position themselves.

Oil and Defense

We did a quick study1 of trade activity in the Oil and Defense sectors. The study covered baskets of top Oil (CVX, XOM, XOP, COP, USO, XLE) and Defense (LMT, NOC, RTX) symbols. The goal of the study was to examine how the geopolitical events would impact these key sectors in the Sunday night trading session.

The conclusion is straightforward; the Sunday night trading session largely assimilates the new information in advance of the regular session on Monday. The reality is that if you wait until Monday to adjust your positions, you are missing significant price discovery. If you wait until Monday are you already too late? Or does Sunday night provide an alpha opportunity to trade against a market overreaction?

Volume Action

The volume surge on Bruce ATS was immediate and huge. Year to date, Sunday was the largest volume night on Bruce ATS for every symbol in our baskets.

Oil Basket Volume Spike (+781% Volume and +922% Notional)

Oil Basket Volume Spike

Defense Basket Volume Spike (+588% Volume and +506% Notional)

Clearly, there was heightened demand for these names tied to the weekend’s geopolitical events.

Price Action

The real story, however, is the Sunday night price discovery action. We compared the regular session Friday close (Feb 27th) to the average executed price on Bruce ATS on Sunday night and the regular Monday close (Mar 2nd).

Defense Stock Price Action

Defense Stock Price Action

For all 9 stocks in our Oil and Defense baskets, there was a sizable move in both the Sunday overnight session and the Monday regular session. For the 8 of the 9 stocks the average Sunday price on Bruce ATS represented a larger move than the Monday close hinting at an alpha opportunity in the Sunday overnight session.
