Did you SPY President Trump’s Speech?
In the BOE, we often talk about the importance of overnight markets in a 24 hour world. Last night provided another good example with President Trump’s speech. We executed $63M worth of SPY last night on 1.16M shares. Bruce ATS clients definitely spied the president’s speech and took action.
Yesterday, the market rallied in the regular session and SPY closed at $655.24 (+0.75%) on the day. SPY held the gain through the extended hours and our 7:30pm ET reference price was $655.14. However, the story changed when the overnight session started.
Last night’s market for SPY was volatile and covered a price range of $10.91 representing the 3rd widest overnight trading range of the year on Bruce ATS. Today, SPY opened at $646.42 (-1.35%) compared to yesterday’s close. When did this move happen? It happened during the overnight session where our last print of the session was -1.03% from yesterday’s 4pm close. Over 15% of notional and 18% of all trades in SPY on Bruce ATS happened during President Trump’s speech.
