The Bruce Overnight Edge: Escape Velocity Acheived

In the United States, everyone is gearing up for the mother of all fireworks shows as the United States celebrates its Semiquincentennial (250th) birthday. But, don’t let all the shinny sparklers and fireworks distract you from the overnight market story. We talk about the growth of the overnight market a lot here in the BOE. And there has been steady growth worthy of attention. That said, in June, the overnight session may have achieved escape velocity!
Frankly, the numbers1 speak for themselves. It is time to sit up straight and lean in.
The Volume Rocket: 905% Year-Over-Year Growth
In June of 2025, the overnight session averaged 24.7 million shares. A solid cottage industry, but nothing that kept the daytime exchanges awake. Now, fast forward to June 2026. The overnight market slammed the throttle forward and traded a massive 248.4 million shares per session. That represents a staggering 904.6% Year-over-Year volume explosion.

On a cumulative basis, the momentum is even more staggering: Year-to-Date (YTD) for 2026, the overnight session is closing in on 20B shares traded. And, 5.2B or 27% of those shares traded in June.
The Notional Sonic Boom: $8.6B Average Session
Volume is often a great proxy for retail participation, but other market participants care about total dollar value traded. Volume growth can happen solely in low dollar stocks that might not interest institutional investors. That is not what happened in the overnight session in June. In June 2026, the overnight industry cleared $8.58 billion per session in notional value. On a Year-over-Year basis, that represents a staggering 508.3% growth over the $1.41 billion average in June 2025.

The overnight session has traded $638B Year-to-Date in 2026. A whopping 28.3% of that notional traded in June where the overnight session crossed $180B traded.
