The Bruce Overnight Edge: The Overnight Open and Halted Names
January 09, 2026 - Chicago, IL
A Couple Market Structure Items
This week we are going to highlight two critical market structure features you should know about the Bruce ATS. When utilized, these Bruce ATS structural mechanics can be valuable to clients. You will need to understand how we handle orders at the open and why sometimes may be able to trade symbols that other venues have halted.
Did You Know?
Queued Orders
Trades on Bruce ATS only happen between the hours of 8:00pm ET to 4:00am ET, but we start accepting orders at 7:50pm ET. Accepted orders between 7:50pm and 8:00pm are queued on a price-time basis and they do generate market data on our feeds. At 8:00pm ET, they are matched against any executable interest.
This functionality is heavily used during our Sunday night sessions. We routinely see tens of thousands of orders queued between 7:50 and 8:00 on Sundays. This is because Sunday has the most “time volatility” built up since the previous close (Friday). Sophisticated Subscribers are using this feature to create true 24 hour Good Til Cancelled (GTC) functionality for their clients. We anticipate that as more subscribers recognize the value of staging orders this behavior will expand beyond Sunday and increase during all sessions.
Halted Names
There are structural reasons, such as the Fair Access Rule (Rule 301(b)(5) of Regulation ATS), that might preclude a given venue from trading in a particular symbol. In the overnight session, we have seen symbols like YINN, YANG, BABX, MSTP and others halted at other ATSs. To date, Bruce ATS has not been required to halt these names. So, when you see these symbols halted on other venues due to these limitations, you can likely route your client orders to Bruce ATS for execution without interruption.
